It forms the foundation of healthy, functioning ecosystems and a high-quality living environment. Clean water, fertile soils, pollination, climate regulation, and nature’s resilience to increasingly frequent extreme weather events such as droughts and floods all depend on it.

The more diverse nature is, the more resilient it becomes to environmental pressures and change. Rivers and aquatic ecosystems play a particularly important role in conserving biodiversity, as they connect habitats, support countless plant and animal species, and significantly influence both environmental quality and human well-being.

This is precisely why local action matters. By protecting rivers, restoring aquatic ecosystems, and promoting sustainable spatial planning and land management, we can create positive impacts that extend far beyond the local scale. Every restored habitat, every improvement in river connectivity, and every step towards healthier freshwater ecosystems contributes to the conservation of biodiversity across wider landscapes.

To mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, we invited participants at the Giving Rivers Space to Live Congress to reflect on a simple yet profound question:

“If biodiversity disappeared, what would you miss the most?”

Their responses revealed just how deeply human life is connected to nature. Participants mentioned healthy and diverse ecosystems, human health, clean water, food, life in rivers, forests, fish, birds, butterflies, and bats. Some spoke of the simple pleasure of walking through a peaceful forest, while others highlighted the importance of a healthy environment for relaxation, recreation, and well-being. Many expressed appreciation for the natural surroundings they know and cherish—places where people and nature can thrive together.

Several responses also conveyed a broader message: that all life is interconnected and that no form of life is inherently more important than another.

A video featuring participants’ responses is available on our Facebook profile:
https://www.facebook.com/reel/1673592803545830

The International Day for Biological Diversity serves as an important reminder that meaningful change for the future of nature and society begins with local action. By taking responsibility for the environments around us, we contribute to global efforts to protect biodiversity and ensure a more sustainable future for generations to come.

On 22 May, we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, which this year is marked under the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact.” Biodiversity is far more than the variety of plant and animal species.
